Australia Day 2007

Australia Day, 26th January, started off with lunch at Flower Drum. I was pretty excited about dining there as it has won many awards and accolades and is one of Melbourne's most renowned restaurants. I was told that a 3 month booking is essential to avoid dissapointment. Anyway, wanting to try my luck I called them 2 weeks in advance and was told that they were fully booked for dinner but could slot us in for lunch.

I think Flower Drum is over rated. Wasn't all impressed with the food but the service was excellent. I reckon Keith makes a better Peking Duck but you might think I'm biased. We had Quail Sung Choi Bao, Battered Garfish with Oyster Sauce and Dim Sum as entree, Peking Duck and Szechuan Peppered Beef with Fried Rice as main. I enjoyed their Chinese Tea the most. It was of good quality, fragrant and very refreshing. Anyway, I won't be too quick or harsh to judge as we didn't sample their special, premium or expensive dishes. So let's see how we go next time.

After filling our tummies we visited the Melbourne Aquarium but it was overly crowded largely due to the school holidays and the Australian Open Tennis crowd. Had to give the simulator ride a miss due to the long queue but I was fascinated with a very large overweight shark that was swimming at snail's pace. It wasn't pregnant but just fat.

We watched Happy Feet at Crown later in the evening. Bought Gold Class tickets but it didn't come cheap at $42 per person. The seats were very comfortable but not worth the price. I much prefer the comfort of our own sofa and TV at home, with a hired dvd at $1.50 overnight. I was hoping to catch fireworks but it was a non-event in Melbourne. Been spoilt with Perth Australia Day fireworks for few consecutive years. Anyway all in all, I had an awesome day! :)
